Washington Wonders: Neah Bay and Cape Flattery
Welcome to our newest blog series, Washington Wonders! Each month we will be featuring a different destination in the state of Washington and highlighting what makes these places so great. There is a whole state to explore and we can’t wait to guide you through it.
This month we are featuring the picturesque Neah Bay and Cape Flattery. Located on the northwest tip of Olympic Peninsula, Neah Bay sits right on the Makah Indian Reservation. The Makah community opens their doors and land to visitors from all over in hopes of sharing their history and stories with the outside world. The Makah Cultural and Research Center is filled with ancient artifacts from over 500 years ago and acts as an archaeological research center.
Neah Bay is also known for its picturesque views, steep stone cliffs, and lush forests. The Olympic peninsula is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the straight of San Juan de Fuca. Because of its location to the ocean, Neah Bay is a huge destination for sports fishing. In fact, it offers the best halibut fishing in the continental United States. Other than fishing, visitors can visit the beaches, go surfing and enjoy a leisurely hike.
Cape Flattery Trail is considered one of the best trails to hike in Washington because of its breathtaking views. Hikers get to look out over the bay on the three-quarter mile trekk to the tip of the cape. Visitors also get to explore Olympic National Park, which is at the center of the peninsula; just a short distance from the cape. Neah Bay and Cape Flattery are perfect for a day getaway.
